Overview
Steeped in history and culture, Kampong Glam was where the Malay royalty once resided. The Sultan (king) wanted a mosque near his residence. As a result, Kampong Glam is graced with the presence of a beautiful mosque with two striking yellow domes. You will also get to roam on the compound of the royal palace. You may wonder how the name “Kampong Glam” came about, surely you will get to find the gelam trees that used to grow abundantly in this area!
Today, Kampong Glam and its vicinity are lined with new businesses. It is very colorful districts - graffiti walls (rare in Singapore), fashionable boutiques, and alfresco cafes. Fortunately, there are still old-time shops and trades to be found, such as the last surviving Indian tea stall selling their signature ginger tea since the 1950s, the last songkok (Islamic cap) maker, and fabric shops that our great grandparents would know.
Some of our native guides grew up in Kampong Glam and they are the best persons to share the history of Singapore’s Malay community! While you are absorbing the rich history of this place, our guides will not forget to tantalize your taste buds with delicious Malay food too!
