Overview
Our Indonesia project is Opwall's flagship site, with the first expedition taking place here in 1995. The marine site on Hoga Island is well-known for its research in the Coral Triangle, while the terrestrial site on Buton Island in SE Sulawesi is among the most published in Sulawesi. Both locations offer an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience from a dedicated team of scientists.
In the less-studied region of our terrestrial site, you'll have a chance to discover new vertebrate species. You'll receive jungle skills training and learn how to work safely in a forest research site. Your time on-site will involve various surveys, such as harp trapping for bats, reptile transects, amphibian spotlight surveys, and bird point counts to monitor biodiversity.
Our marine site on Hoga Island, at the heart of the Coral Triangle, is perfect for learning SCUBA diving and gaining experience in reef ecology surveys. You can work toward your PADI Open Water Course or collaborate with our marine scientists, learning marine survey techniques, from reef fish stereo-video surveys to benthic transect video surveys.
