Overview
Great Shape! Inc.’s 1000 Smiles project provides access to free dental care for thousands of people in Jamaica and St. Lucia. These families have little access to dental care; there is just one public dentist for every 100,000 people in rural Jamaica. Tooth decay can lead to cavities, disease, low birth rates, unemployment, and even death. Overall health is dependent on good oral healthcare. A healthy smile can be the difference between gaining employment in the tourist industry and no job at all.
Volunteers are dental professionals and non-dental folks who have a passion to serve others and want to assist with dental projects. Volunteers set up temporary dental clinics and provide cleanings, extractions, sealants, surgery, dentures, and oral health education.
Our teams partner with the Sandals Foundation, the Jamaican Ministry of Health and Jamaica’s University of Technology. Through our very generous partnership, the Sandals Foundation and Sandals Resorts International provide all accommodations, meals, entertainment, logistical support and in-country transportation at no charge.
