Overview
Have you always been interested in exploring colorful, fascinating Mexico? Do you love sea turtle, the beach, and adventure? Sadly, the new developments and growth of tourism in Mexico has negatively impacted the sea-turtle population in the country. This once thriving specie has declined dramatically and are now in the endangered list of animals. Moreover, due to growing demand of turtle meat and eggs in the market, these animals become victims of relentless poaching and many of their eggs never get to hatch. The turtles also end up getting entangled in illegal fishing nets or garbage. There is an urgent need to protect the sea-turtles.
In this volunteer opportunity, you will work under the supervision of turtle experts to aid conservation work and collect crucial data on the turtle population. You will patrol the beaches to protect the nesting turtles and relocate the eggs in the incubation corral for safety. Once the hatchlings emerge, you will release them back to the ocean. You will also be involved with rescue and rehabilitation operation and environmental education workshops. Your time spent in this volunteer program will a make a vast difference in the lives of the turtles and protect them from untimely extinction. With your help, many turtles will be able to live full and complete lives. By raising awareness, you will help prevent unethical tourism activities and help the local turtle population thrive. The data you collect will be crucial for research work and implementation of effective turtle conservation initiatives. No previous training is needed, as on-site training will be given upon arrival to the camp. Basic Spanish skills may be helpful for communication with the locals, but not necessary in order to take part in the project.
