Overview
Operation Wallacea has teamed up with Wildlife and Ecological Investments (WEI) in South Africa to conduct vital conservation research. South Africa is home to our terrestrial sites, boasting abundant wildlife and making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts. We also have a marine site in Sodwana Bay, perfect for those looking to start their SCUBA diving journey.
In South Africa, we operate two terrestrial sites: Gondwana Game Reserve in the Western Cape and Somkhanda Community Game Reserve. These locations provide opportunities to observe the Big 5: African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and rhinoceros. You'll actively participate in various research projects, assisting our teams with surveying large animals, birds, and vegetation. You'll also learn to service camera traps and process their data.
Our marine site is located in Sodwana Bay within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During your stay, you can choose to complete either a PADI Open Water course or an Indian Ocean Reef Ecology course. The Reef Ecology course is suitable for those already dive certified or who prefer snorkeling, and it involves a series of lectures, workshops, and practical sessions.
