Overview

To accommodate an ever-increasing population, forested lands are being destroyed in Sri Lanka. Elephants are losing their habitat as a result of this human encroachment of forests. With their homes being cleared on a daily basis, these animals can find comfort in orphanages, which are breeding sanctuaries for rescued, injured, and abused wild elephants. IFRE Volunteers' elephant program works with these elephant orphanages to take care of these creatures in a meaningful way.

When you join this project, you will be placed at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. You will be involved in helping the mahouts (elephant handlers) in various tasks. You will clean the sheds and the elephant enclosures, prepare milk bottles to feed the elephants, and, at times, wash the elephants with brushes made of coconut husks. There are no specific qualifications needed to join the volunteering in Sri Lanka elephant project. This is an exciting experience in which you will help and improve the elephants' world.
