Overview
Do you dream of experiencing beautiful African scenery and wildlife at an affordable price? Do you want to help in impoverished communities in Uganda while learning about their fascinating culture and history?
Healthcare is a major challenge for Ugandan people. The country has one of the worst healthcare records in the world. The majority of Uganda's rural population are deprived of adequate healthcare facilities, which are either too expensive for them or out of their reach. The local hospitals or clinics where they are treated are underfunded and lack skilled healthcare professionals. To get basic treatment these people have to travel miles, and, in the process, they often succumb to treatable diseases. RCDP's Uganda medical volunteering program tries to change this situation.
Your exact responsibilities will greatly depend on your education, experience, and existing skills/qualifications. Volunteers are not allowed to perform major diagnostic or surgical work, but will work closely with local doctors and medical staff by shadowing them. Common tasks include taking measurements, assisting doctors, working in health camps distributing medication, providing health advice and counseling to patients, and treating minor injuries and wounds.
Important Information
Applicants over the age of 18 interested in joining our Uganda volunteer healthcare program do not need previous healthcare experience or education. Our programs are designed to accommodate volunteers with a medic background and entry-level med students a valuable understanding of the South African medical health system.
Those with higher-level medical qualifications and work experience will have the skills to provide a greater impact to the patients in need. However, this medical volunteer program is focused on skill sharing to benefit both you and the local staff. Regardless of your experience and background, a passion for humanitarian work and the ability to show patience and flexibility when working in stressful environments is a must.
