Overview
The 3 Days Danakil Depression tour offers a rare and unforgettable chance to experience the captivating beauty of Ethiopia's distinct landscapes, including volcanoes, hot springs, and salt flats.
- Day 1 - Mekelle - Hamed Ela
We'll be awaiting your arrival at Mekelle airport at 9:00 am to kick off our journey to Hameela via Berhale. Berhale, a small town in the Afar region with around 10,000 residents, will be our lunch stop, where we'll finalize permits and engage local scout and police support. Despite Danakil's challenging conditions, including a rocky coast and inhospitable surroundings, it boasts enchanting landscapes with vibrant colors, mineral-rich elements, saltwater springs, and bubbling oil lakes. Various points in Danakil lie more than 100 meters below sea level, offering unique sights. After lunch in Berahle, we'll continue to Hamed Ela, witnessing outstanding landscapes and immersing ourselves in the local culture along the way. Don't miss the breathtaking sunset at the salt lake Assale (-120 meters below sea level), where we'll set up camp in Hamed Ela.
- Day 2 - Hamed Ela- Dallol - Erta Ale
Early in the morning, embark on a drive to Dalol, which is just 20 km from the campsite. Each site in Dalol, including the Dallol mountain with its various water springs, the sulfur lake, oil lake, salt mining area with camel caravans, and salt mountains, is accessible with less than a 20-minute walk. Witness the salt digging process and loading onto camels in the mining area, guided by locals who know the area well. Return to the HemedEla campsite for lunch. Afterward, continue to the awe-inspiring Erta Ale volcano, crossing the desert on a road that was once considered one of the world's worst but has now been asphalted, reducing the drive to two hours. The road takes you to the mountain's base, minimizing the walk to the volcano's top to just about 30 minutes. Capture panoramic views and photos of the entire crater and the lava before sunset. Explore the lava activities during the night and sleep in prepared small huts located just 200 meters away from the volcano, with a top mountain lying above 613 meters above sea level. Overnight on the top of the mountain in the prepared huts.
- Day 3 - Erta Ale - Afdera - Mekelle
At 5:00 am, witness the captivating activities of the volcano during sunrise. Walk back for 30 minutes to where the cars are parked, passing through scattered small desert trees and igneous rocks formed from years of volcanic eruptions. After an hour's drive, arrive at Lake Afdera, where you can swim in the salt lake, wash in the hot springs around the lake, and observe locals working in the salt mines. Following this, embark on a 3-hour drive to Mekelle to catch your flight to Addis.
