Overview

Explore the Tigray Churches during this 5-Day Overland Tour in Ethiopia. The Tigray Region, situated in the northern part of Ethiopia, holds significance as the cradle of Ethiopian and African civilization. Notably, it proudly stands as a symbol of resilience, commemorating the historic Battle of Adwa, where the Italians were defeated.

Beyond its historical importance, Tigray boasts a unique landscape, rich culture, and resilient people known for their commitment to freedom and the defense of their homeland. Emphasizing peace and security, the residents have consistently resisted any threats to their country and region.

Presently, Tigray is celebrated for its history, culture, and a collection of ancient rock-hewn churches. With more than 125 registered rock-hewn churches dating back to the 4th to 15th centuries A.D., the region offers a fascinating glimpse into its rich past. Additionally, hidden churches add an element of mystery to this extraordinary journey.

The tour starts from shire airport and it covers all the way to the Tigray towns ; Axum , Adwa , Adigrat , Hawzen and wukro and ends in Mekelle city Alula Aba Nega Airport .

  • Day 1 - Fly from Addis Ababa to shire airport then drive to Axum city

Upon your arrival at Shire Airport, our representative will extend a warm welcome to you. From there, you will proceed directly to Axum town. Following lunch, your city tour will commence with a visit to the Axum Obelisks, erected by the Pagan people before the 4th century A.D. These monumental obelisks serve as markers for the tombs of various kings and noble individuals.

Next, explore the Archaeological Museum, housing an extensive collection of ancient Axumite artifacts. Following the museum visit, indulge in a traditional coffee ceremony and peruse a handicraft shop. Continue north of Axum to witness the swimming pool of the Queen of Sheba, Ezana inscription, and the tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel atop a hill.

On your return journey, make a stop at the profoundly sacred Saint Mary Zion church. Here, witness the house of the Ark of the Covenant, safeguarded by a devoted monk who dedicates his life to its protection. Finally, explore the palace of the Queen of Sheba and the Gudit Stelea field, concluding your enriching tour of Axum's historical treasures.

  • Day 2 - Axum -Gheralta

Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a scenic drive via the dramatic Adwa mountain. Your first stop will be the Yeha temple, an ancient structure dating back to the 8th to 7th centuries BC. This temple is believed to be the capital of the pre-Aksumite civilization. Explore the historical site and visit the museum to delve into the rich heritage of the region.

Following the visit to Yeha, continue your journey for about an hour to reach the renowned and oldest monastery of Debre Damo. Take some time to explore this significant religious site. En route, make a stop in Adigrat for a delicious lunch to refuel for the rest of the day.

Afterward, resume your drive to Hawzien, where you will have the opportunity to soak in the captivating landscapes along the way. This leg of the journey promises both cultural and historical exploration, offering a well-rounded experience as you traverse through Ethiopia's unique and diverse terrain.

  • Day 3 - Visit Gheralta Churches

Commence your day with a delightful breakfast before embarking on a 12-kilometer drive west of Hawzien. Your destination is the renowned Abune Yemata church, built by one of the nine saints in the 6th century A.D., as per the clergy. This church promises an adventurous experience, situated in a captivating location with a panoramic view and adorned with exceptional paintings.

After exploring Abune Yemata, enjoy a satisfying lunch before heading north of the town to discover another ancient gem, the St. George (Giorgis) Maykado church. Constructed around the 4th century A.D. by the twin kings of Axum, King Ezana and Sayzana, this church stands as a testament to Ethiopia's rich historical and religious heritage. Immerse yourself in the captivating surroundings and appreciate the fine architecture of this ancient site.

  • Day 4 - Visit the Hawzen Churches

In the morning, embark on a 12-kilometer drive to witness the extraordinary Mariam and Daniel Korkor rock churches, perched atop the Gheralta mountains at an altitude of 2400 meters. The journey unfolds with a trek starting from the parking area, requiring about an hour and a half of walking and climbing. Along the way, be captivated by the stunning views, unique stone formations, and the presence of volcanoes.

Reaching the summit of the flat-topped mountain, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment, akin to a mountain physiotherapy session, and be awestruck by the panoramic view that unfolds before you. These churches, Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, were constructed in different periods; Mariam Korkor in the 4th century A.D. by the twin kings of Axum, and Daniel Korkor by Saint Daniel the monk originally from Tigray.

In the afternoon, the journey continues to the picturesque church of Mariam Papasit, located near the first group of churches. This particular church offers an easier walk, nestled at the base of a cliff in a lush, green area where local communities reside. Immerse yourself in the serene surroundings and marvel at the cultural and natural beauty of the region.

  • Day 5 - Wukro - Mekelle

Today's journey takes us to the southwest of Hawzen, where we'll discover the magnificent Abune Abraham church perched on a hill. While the one-hour hike may present a challenge for older individuals, the unique features of this church make it a truly remarkable destination. Constructed by Aba Abraham, the church boasts the tallest pillar, a wealth of church treasures, stunning paintings, and notably, the longest tunnel.

Following the descent back to our vehicle, we will drive to Wukro town. En route, a stop is planned at Abraha we Atsibeha, an ancient and renowned Tigray church housing the burial site of two Axumite kings. This church, dating back to the 4th century A.D., is steeped in historical significance.

Upon reaching Wukro, a delightful lunch awaits. Post-lunch, immerse yourself in the cultural richness of the region with a visit to the Wukro Museum. As the day unfolds, we will drive to the capital city of Tigray, Mekele, where we will either spend the night or transfer to Mekelle airport for those departing to Addis.
