Overview

The Environmental Conservation & Agricultural Enhancement Uganda (Eco-Agric Uganda) is a Ugandan registered community NGO established in 2007. It aims at sustainably improving livelihoods of the critically vulnerable absolutely poor women and children in Uganda. These are the illiterate (cant read or write) even their names, they do not have food, shelter and their children do not go to school. Those that go to school arrive late or do not have scholastic materials. They depend on agriculture for their livelihood, women infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, young adolescent mothers, plus orphans and vulnerable children. Eco Agric Uganda’s activities involve promoting improved agricultural production, enhanced rural livelihoods and healthy environment through advocacy, research, training and capacity building.

Important Information

During your internship, you will be involved in the following activities.

The Agro-forestry project, briquette making or contract farming project or hypertension prevention treatment and control any project that you will want to be involved in.

Sustainable agriculture farming methods. You will help the organization to set up standard agriculture demonstration sites at the Hoima office.

You will promote and educate rural poor community members (women and youth groups in the field) about permaculture, organic farming and agro-forestry.

Construction: You will take part in the different Eco-Friendly construction projects that the organization has in Hoima

You will support the organization to work with women and children to improve their living conditions

Education. You will help the organization in supporting the poor children, in schools in the rural areas of Uganda. Activities with the children include school gardening and spending time with the vulnerable children in primary and nursery schools. The organization will support and help you to make your ideas come true and help the children.

Health. You will take part in our activities around behavior change communication,
Hypertension prevention, treatment and control or nutrition education.

Management. You will help in designing and implementing different projects. You can assist the programs manager at the office for a variety of tasks, from reporting, to making work plans, plus helping with the coordination of a project.
You will work with children at San Martino Primary School by teaching them Physical Education, English, Geography or any subject. This will be done with the help of a teacher.

Fundraising. You will help in fundraising for primary six or seven classes at San Martino Primary School

N.B: THESE ACTIVITIES ARE FLEXIBLE AND CAN CHANGE

Accommodation and meals
The organization will provide accommodation and three meals a day for the volunteer. The three meals will be bread and black tea for breakfast, posho and beans for lunch and Supper. Lunch is served at the office. You are required to come with some snacks that you can eat in case its lunch time and you are not at office. However, lunch will still be kept for you.

The volunteers' residence is located near the Hoima and Kibaale offices. It is currently composed of four eco-houses, two with individual rooms and two shared rooms. There is electricity in Hoima and solar in Kibaale and you will have access to a basic kitchen. Mosquito nets are provided. We have had a number of vegetarian and vegan volunteers, and can easily adapt to their diet.

Child protection; on arrival, you must sign the organizations child protection policy. You must not take pictures or videos of naked children. Only take pictures of dressed up children. In case you take pictures of naked children you will be prosecuted under the Government of Uganda laws. You MUST not stay with children in isolation with out a staff. It is an offence to bring children to the volunteers residence. While working with children, you must be in company or supervision of a staff from the school or Eco-Agric Uganda

Dress code. For women, it’s not advisable to put on very short and very tight clothes as it’s against the culture. You Must dress up descently in respectable clothes. Very tight pants like leggings plus very short and tight clothes are not allowed. All volunteers are advised to carry towels.

Transport to the field.
Transport to the field will be on a motorcycle. The organization will provide fuel for the motorcycle and a helmet for you to wear. You MUST put on a helmet while on a motorcycle. You need heavy jackets, shoes and a trouser while on a motorcycle. This is only for the field

Transport to and from Entebbe airport. You are required to pay 200,000/= for transport from Entebbeairport to the Wakiso residence from where you will move to other parts of the country. At the airport you will get somebody with a placard bearing your names on top and those of Robert Muwawu. He will take you directly to Wakiso. This fee does not include transport back to Entebbe

COVID TEST: You must ensure that you take a COVID-19 test not beyond 72 hours of boarding the plane to come.

Payment of volunteer support fees.
You will pay$3 per day for the period you will stay with us. Even if you are away or not, even if you go for safari, you will have to pay the $3 per day (regardless of being arround or not). The transport and $3 per day MUST be paid to the organizations accountant or Programs Manager on arrival. You MUST get a receipt for this.

Orientation: For the first week, you will stay in Wakiso for orientation unless advised otherwise. During this time, you will learn about the organization and what it does. You are free to propose any other activities to do in case you identify any gaps where you can support the organization.
