Overview
Lesotho, often referred to as the Mountain Kingdom, remains relatively unexplored and mysterious. Thaba Tours, with 22 years of experience, specializes in various services including airport transfers between Maseru, Durban, and Johannesburg (primarily for larger groups), tour arrangements, and accommodation bookings spanning from 1 to 15 days across Lesotho.
We offer a diverse range of activities, including hiking, trekking, pony trekking, 4x4 adventure tours, mountain biking, birding, and botany tours at high altitudes. Additionally, opportunities exist to explore rock art paintings, dinosaur footprints, cave dwellings, and immerse oneself in rural village life while engaging with the local culture and heritage—a paradise for filmmakers and photographers.
Lesotho Overland 4x4 adventure tour, duration 3 Nights- 4 Days, combined into this tour Adventure, Culture, Sight-seeing and History. Optional extras Pony Trekking, Hiking and Mountain Biking.
- Day 1 - Lesotho Maseru Capital City
Pickup at Maseru airport and depart for Teya-Teyaneng
At Teya-Teyaneng there is a remarkable village where cave dwellings have been carved out under towering rocks. The families still living there today are descendants of the original people who “built” the caves in the 19th century and the site is now a National Heritage Site. The people living there now still live much as their forefathers did almost two centuries ago and those who have occupied the caves over the years have left a rich cultural history. Gruesomely, this area was once home to cannibals and past generations of Basotho fled to the caves to hide from them.
- Day 2 - Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village and Maletsunyane Fall
Departing after breakfast, your journey begins with a Maseru orientation tour, including a visit to the tapestry-making center and an option to purchase stamps at the Maseru Post Office. You'll then ascend the impressive Thaba Putswa mountain range, drive through scenic landscapes to Roma, a center of the Roman Catholic Church and home to the National University of Lesotho.
Here, you can explore the magnificent Maletsunyane Falls, one of Africa's highest waterfalls at 204 meters. Your route continues through Lesotho's rugged mountains, offering picturesque views, medicinal plants, and basalt stone formations. Descending to a viewpoint, you'll enjoy panoramic valley views before reaching the summit of Makheka’s Pass. Along the way, you can opt for Basotho pony trekking or hike to the base of Maletsunyane Falls, where swimming and trout fishing are available.
- Day 3 - Sani Rock Art Site and Boitsela Waterfall
You'll embark on a picturesque journey through bushy terrain, small woodlands, and farmland adorned with charming villages. Along the way, you'll encounter lush vegetation used by locals for medicinal purposes, enjoy scenic mountain vistas, and pass through rural communities. Basalt stones with unique hardened bubbles can be seen at the roadside. A packed lunch will be provided.
As you venture into the remote regions of Lesotho, you'll have ample opportunities for engaging with the local population. Your destination is nestled in a serene and stunning countryside setting. Lunch will be served at the lodge, and afterward, you can choose from the following optional activities at your own cost: 1. A 3-hour hike to Echo Caves, where you'll find two San Rock Art sites. 2. A 3-hour horseback ride to Boitsela Waterfall.
- Day 4 - End of Tour (Maseru Airport- Moshoeshoe 1 Airport)
Depart Lodge after breakfast for Maseru airport. The tour will finish off by visiting Morija, named after the biblical Mt. Moriah. Morija has maintained the magic that first attracted the missionaries. It is the only forested village in Lesotho, with every road lined with trees, some of which dating back more than a century.
Hidden between the trees is the historic ‘mother church’, as well as the schools, the printing works, the hospital, the museum and other institutions established by the missionaries.
