Overview
EBC Cho La Pass Gokyo Trek is one of the popular adventure treks in Nepal. It lies in the Everest region of Nepal. The trek is practically similar to the general route of Everest Base Camp. But it provides additional adventure through exploring beautiful Gokyo Valley, Gokyo Lake, amazing viewpoint Gokyo Ri, and Cho La Pass. Highlights of the EBC Gokyo Trek via Chola Pass includes scenery of the major 4 highest mountains during this earth (Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu & Cho Oyu) and lots of more snow-capped peaks. These peaks have a 360-degree view from one of the foremost beautiful viewpoints at Gokyo Ri. They include beautiful cultural villages with sincere and hospitable locals, remote and mysterious valleys and landscapes. The trekking route goes on to Gorak Shep, Everest Base Camp, and Kalapatthar also referred to as Everest View Point. This feeling of accomplishment will continue throughout the trek.
Gokyo to EBC via Cho La Pass is certainly a difficult trek. You should know that even the simplest of the treks in the Everest region offers you a tinge of adventure with high altitude hikes also as steep walks up-and-down. In spite of its difficulties, the rewards of this trek stand high over its hazards; thus inspiring the ever-larger number of intrepid trekkers to face the challenges head-on.

- Day 1 - Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m/4,592ft altitude) and transfer to Hotel
Adventure Mountain Nepal Trekking and Climbing’s airport arrival and departure representative will meet you at the airport as per your arrival schedule. He/she welcomes you and drives you to the hotel. Check-in hotel and take a rest or relaxation time at the Hotel. Then you can have a free excursion to know the surroundings and visit our office to get brief information of Gokyo to EBC via Cho La Pass Trek, we also conduct an introduction program with the trekking leader and official team.

Meal includes: Breakfast. In general, we prefer BB plan for your stay in cities so you can choose varieties of tastes in different restaurants around the city. - Day 2 - Guided tour around world’s Heritage sites of Kathmandu
Early morning breakfast at the hotel. Our guide will pick you up from the hotel for sightseeing of World Heritage Sites. Actually, there are seven World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu and we arrange sightseeing spots according to your choice, you have to choose only 3/4 spots for a day since it is not possible to visit all places in a single day – at least 2/3 days requires to have a sightseeing tour of all heritage sites in Kathmandu. World Heritage Sites of UNESCO in Kathmandu are; Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Swyambhunath Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Changu Narayan Temple. In the evening we again can have a pre-trek discussion.
- Day 3 - Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,800m/9,184ft altitude) & trek to Phakding (2,650m/8692ft altitude)
Early in the morning drive to the Domestic terminal of Tribhuwan airport. Take a flight for about 30 minutes to Tenzing Hillary airport Lukla- is a beautiful valley which is surrounded by High Mountain and hills from all direction. Make sure the backpacks and all stuffs fully arranged to get started the trek towards Phakding. The easy and scenic trail follows soft descends to the bank of the Dudh Koshi River, follow the riverbank of the river before we reach at Ghat. After there we continuously walk gentle ascent to Phakding. We visit several Gompas, Monasteries, and beautiful stone carving (written Buddhist scripts) all the way to Phakding.
- Day 4 - Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,283ft altitude)
Early breakfast at teahouse. Follow ascent trail through pine forest. We have to cross several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River, gradually walk via Benkar, Chumoa, and Monjo to reach the check post of Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park where we have to record our National Park entry permit. With a walk of zigzag ascends and descends, mostly uphill takes us towards the capital of Sherpa people at Namche Bazaar. We can have a beautiful view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru Peak, and others.
- Day 5 - Rest day at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and excursion around the places
As we are already above 3,000 meters from sea level at Namche Bazaar, it is a perfect way to acclimatize by resting and exploring around at Namche Bazaar before ascending towards more altitudes. Health experts suggest keeping moving and stay active to adapt to the weather. Today we ascend towards Syangboche View Point to have excellent views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru, and other snow-capped peaks. Again we continue the walk with continuous scenery towards Everest View Hotel; it is a good place to have a refreshment drink with the views in our surroundings. After there we go to explore an important Buddhist monastery of the region at Khumjung Monastery then back to Namche Bazar. In the evening, we can explore around the Bazaar, can use ATMs, use internet cyber, cafes, and restaurants to be close with locals as well as learn the unique culture, traditions, and lifestyles of Sherpa’s.
- Day 6 - Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,040m/13,251ft altitude)
We leave Namche Bazaar after taking breakfast, continue the straightforward trail with the same trail of EBC trek until we reach Sanasa, then we choose the left side following a gentle ascend with a good view of snow-capped peaks and mountain vegetation. Along the trail, we can have a chance to explore cultural villages and terraced farmlands. Finally, we reach a beautiful Sherpa village of Dole, where the main way of living of that people is farming and mountain tourism.
- Day 7 - Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4,410m/13,578ft altitude)
Leaving Dole, we gradually follow the trail of Gokyo, this day we will be headed to Machhermo with excellent views of Mt. Cho Oyu, Kananga, and Thamserku. Trek from Dole to Machhermo is a comparatively short walk schedule aimed to explore more, adjust with altitude perfectly, and feel physically and mentally stress-free thus we don’t have to stop for lunch anywhere along the route. As we gradually ascend altitudes along the side of the beautiful Gokyo valley, there we cross several summer settlements that are used to graze farming yaks in the summertime.
- Day 8 - Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Lake (4,750m/15,580ft altitude)
After having breakfast, we start our adventure journey towards Gokyo Lake. Once we get started the walk from the very beginning we follow the scenic path of several ascends followed by only a few descend. The major attraction of this day is we explore Nepal’s largest glacier called Ngozumpa glacier along with the trail. We follow the steep rocky trail from the side of the glacier into the Gokyo valley. There are five main lakes inside the Gokyo Valley where the third lake is the largest one with the name “DUDH POKHARI” we can see the majestic reflection of Mt. Cho Oyu and Gyanchung Kang at the pristine freshwater of the lake. Finally, we reach at fifth Lake of Gokyo for an overnight stay; there is a small settlement most probably one of the highest hamlets on the earth.
- Day 9 - Early morning ascent to Gokyo Ri (5,340m/17,515ft altitude) and full day excursion around the valley.
Before having breakfast in, early morning (around 4 AM) we start to ascend Gokyo Ri which takes three hours to gradually ascend from the village. Gokyo Ri, also known as Gokyo peak is most probably the best viewpoint of the Khumbu and Everest region, once we reach the top of the rock of Gokyo Ri we will be rewarded by 360-degree views of the world’s towering mountain ranges including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and many more snow-capped peaks. After spending an hour of time there, we safely retrace our steps back to Gokyo. The remaining times of the day we explore around the biggest glacial or Nepal – Ngozumpa glacier as well as make a tour to other lakes excursion.
- Day 10 - Trek from Gokyo to Thangna (4,650m/15,252ft altitude)
After having breakfast at Gokyo, we can take time to excursion around Gokyo valley since this day we do not have to walk too long to reach Thangna. Have lunch at the tea house of Gokyo, we leave from there to Thangna village. It is a Sherpa cultural village situated in a corner of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Keep moving around the place to make it physically active before cross the adventurous Cho La Pass 5,429 meters the next day.
- Day 11 - Trek from Thangna to Dzongla (4,843m/15,885ft altitude) via Cho La pass (5,420m/17,777ft altitude)
After having early morning breakfast (around 4 AM), we leave the tea house at Thangna since we have to cross the adventurous pass before sunlight melts the snow. We gradually follow ascend along the valley towards Cho La Pass. Cho La Pass is usually covered by blue ice over the rocks from where we have really close- up views of the Himalayas. After having a short and memorable time at the top, our trail immediately follows gradual descends all the way to another charming Sherpa village of Dzongla.
- Day 12 - Trek from Dzongla to Lobuche (4,928m/16,164ft altitude)
After taking breakfast at Dzongla, we start the walk, this day also we are not going to walk too long to give accompany of recent hard physical workout for Cho La Pass. Our scenic trail goes with numerous numbers of time ups and down with continuous views of Mt. Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam et cetera. Lobuche is always busy during the time of the season because it is the main stop of Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trail.
- Day 13 - Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep (5,160m/16,925ft altitude) & continue to Everest Base Camp (5,380m/17,646ft altitude) then back to Gorakshep
Early morning breakfast at teahouse. Today’s trail leads to our core destination. We cross moraine of Khumbu glacier, pass through pyramid sign on the way from where you can observe Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Langtern, Mt. Khumbutse, and Mt. Nuptse. Then again we follow small trail to Thangma Riju from where we perceive 360 degree vista of Snowy Mountain. Then climb steeply trail to reach at Gorakshep where we find Show Mountains in all direction including Mt. Everest & Pumori. Gorakshep is our today’s stop for dinner and overnight. Take off our backpacks and heavy stuffs at tea house and start a journey towards Everest Base Camp. After having a great time at Everest Base Camp, we retrace our steeps back to Gorakshep for overnight stay.
- Day 14 - Morning hike to Kala Patthar (5,545m/18,187ft altitude) and trek to Pheriche (4,243m/13,917ft altitude)
We start the trek early in the morning at around 4:00 A.M. to Kalapathar for a sunrise view over the Himalayas. We walk continuously ascend for around 2 hours to reach Kala Pathar. When the first ray of the sun strikes the mountain it turns into Golden color which seems pretty amazing. Take picture of golden Mountain and soaring around Kala Patthar return back to Gorakshep for breakfast. Then we start gradual descend trail all the way to Pheriche.
- Day 15 - Trek from Pheriche to Tengboche
Breakfast at teahouse. Follow descend trail through riverside and crossing suspension bridge of Imja Khola to Pongboche village. After that you again follow the trail through pine forest to Tengboche.
- Day 16 - Trek from Tengboche to Monjo (2,835m/9,299ft altitude) via Namche Bazaar
Breakfast at teahouse. Follow the descending trail through rhododendron and fir forest. Cross suspension bridge of Dudh Koshi. Pass Tashinga and Sansa village. Follow the steep trail to Kyangjuma which leads you to Namche. Rest there for a while taking tea/coffee. We can buy local handmade garments if you want. Then again follow the descending trail from Namche hill to cross Dudh Koshi Bridge. When we pass Dudh Koshi River we will officially out from Sagarmatha National Park. Follow downward trail to Monjo village.
- Day 17 - Trek back to Lukla
Breakfast at teahouse. The last day of Gokyo to EBC via Cho La Pass Trek follows descend trail to Phakding. We have to cross the Suspension Bridge of Dudh Koshi, pass through pin and rhododendron forest with different prayer flags and stone rocks on the way back to Lukla.
- Day 18 - Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel
Early morning breakfast at the lodge. Walk to Lukla airport to schedule a flight. Adventure Mountain Nepal Trekking and Climbing’s airport arrival and departure representative will meet you at the Kathmandu airport. Drive to the hotel. In the evening feel free for leisure and personal activities such as Shopping, markets explore, spa, massage, rest and relax can be an option.
- Day 19 - Spare day. Free for personal activities or additional activities on request.
This is a day as a spare which can use with rest, relaxation and free walk around the market. Day trip in request: Sightseeing, Meditation, Rafting, Paragliding, Short Hiking, Mountain flight, and other activities can be done according to your plan. In the evening, we will have a farewell dinner together with an entire team of Adventure Mountain Nepal.
- Day 20 - Farewell, departure transfer to Tribhuwan International Airport.
Our airport arrival and departure representative will drop you at Tribhuwan International Airport on your scheduled flight.
