The Honduras Child Alliance provides educational enrichment and healthy living programs on the north coast of Honduras, in the beach community of El Porvenir. Since all projects are within easy walking distance from volunteer housing, these placements provide the chance to live in a vibrant and friendly Caribbean town while adding support to the young people of the community.
Children attending the educational programs are mainly in grades 1-6 but there is also an evening English program for adults and teens and quarterly dog and cat vaccination programs that volunteers are welcome to get involved in. As a community-based project, Honduras Child Alliance relies on a blended team of Honduran young adults and international volunteers working together. This unique team structure provides an effective set of skills to help young people gain access to opportunities through education and healthy living.
Volunteers work with their team to provide literacy in Spanish and English, computer skills, arts, environmental science, nutrition, social-emotional learning, sexuality education, and more! With Honduras Child Alliance, volunteers truly get to immerse themselves in the community and culture. Spanish instruction is available pre-arrival or on-site and is taught by bilingual tutors from El Porvenir.
While many families in El Porvenir are living in extreme poverty, the community is welcoming and safe. As a developing country, things move more slowly in Honduras and the educational system is under-resourced. With children coming from disadvantaged homes and attending poorly equipped schools, youngsters typically have learning gaps and are casualties of systemic poverty. These young people form the groups in need, and helping them is what volunteering is about.
Honduras Child Alliance has two volunteer houses in the ‘El Centro’ part of town. They are very close to local markets and the beach, and an easy walk to each of HCA's three classroom locations. Both houses are clean, comfortable, and secure, with complete kitchens, purified water, bathrooms with showers, electricity, and wifi. The small city of La Ceiba is only 20 minutes to the east. La Ceiba is a lively place with shops, an open-air market, ATMs, inexpensive restaurants, and good medical care. The Honduras Child Alliance is small, but with the energy of devoted volunteers, they are enriching lives and providing opportunities for children who would otherwise have none. They are looking for someone like YOU!
