Overview

Join us on this 8-day trip of eastern Serbia and explore some of the most beautiful natural landmarks of the region. Climb Mount Rtanj, famously called the Serbian Pyramid because of its unique shape. Reach its highest point, Siljak (1565m). Explore Soko and visit its famous medieval fortress.

Continue your adventure by driving further east. Travel to Bovan Lake and explore the surrounding areas. Climb Midzor (2168m), the highest peak of the Western Balkan Mountains. Explore the hidden waterfalls of the Serbian Balkan on an off-road vehicle and travel to both the 42m-high Uppsala Waterfall and the 64m-high Pilj.

Enjoy kayaking on Lake Zavoj and visit its hidden coves. Tour the city of Nis and see some of its major landmarks. For more about this tour, please read the itinerary below.

  • Day 1 - Nis

    Drive to your accommodation (please check out the 'What's Included section to for free pickups) in Sokobanja upon landing at Nis airport. You have free time to relax and explore the city on your own after that.

  • Day 2 - Clim Mount Rtanj

    Start your adventure after a hearty breakfast. Head for Mt. Rtanj, start hiking uphill and reach all the way to the top of its peak, Siljak.

    See the ruins of a small stone chapel dedicated to St. George on the top of the peak. This chapel was built in 1932 by the wife of a local miner. Today, the chapel is in ruins mostly because of treasure hunters who blew it with dynamite while searching for the supposedly hidden gold.

    Descend down the mountain and head for your accommodation where you will have lunch. Visit Soko, a medieval city famous for its fortress. The fortress was built in the 6th century during the reign of Roman Emperor Justinian I. See the remains of the fortress, including the gate, walls and three towers.

  • Day 3 - Bovan Lake

    Leave your hotel after breakfast and take a short drive to Bovan Lake. Hike to the areas surrounding the lake and explore its surroundings. Travel to the village of Vrmdza, which lies a few kilometers away from the lake. Have your lunch and explore the village. Return to your accommodation in Sokobanja in the evening.

  • Day 4 - Hike Mount Midzor

    Have breakfast and get ready for an adventure. Arrive at the foot of Mount Midzor after a 2-hour drive. Start your ascent from the base. This hike is approximately 8km long and not technically demanding. Reach the top of the mountain and enjoy the view below. Have lunch after walking back to the foot of the mountain and drive back to our hotel.

  • Day 5 - Hiking and Waterfall

    Go on an off-road drive after breakfast and travel deeper into the Serbian Balkans. Start your hiking trip. Enjoy the sight of beautiful mountains above you and verdant greenery all around. Explore the natural wonders of the area.

    This region is known for its waterfalls. In fact, a third of all waterfalls in Serbia are located in this region. See some of the most famous ones, including the 42m-high Uppsala and 64m-high Pilj. Hop into the jeep and head for your hotel.

  • Day 6 - Kayak

    Just a half-an-hour drive away from your accommodation is Zavojsko Lake, your destination of the day. Drive to the lake after breakfast and receive safety and technical instructions from your instructor.

    Time to paddle your kayaks on its pristine water next. Zavojsko is an artificial lake that was created when the Zavoj Hydroelectric Power Plant came into existence in 1969. The lake is about 16km long and around 60 meters deep. Return to your accommodation after a day-long adventure.

  • Day 7 - Nis City Tour

    Start the city tour of Nis with a visit to Nis Fortress as well as the famous Cele Kula, the tower erected from the skulls of fallen Serbian warriors killed in a battle that took place on May 31, 1809.

    Nis was the administrative, military and trade center of various states and empires during its long history. In what falls in today’s Nis were born Roman emperors Constantine the Great and Constantius III

    Explore this medieval city stop by the famous Bohemian Street to have your lunch. Head for one of the most famous taverns in Nis in the evening and enjoy delicious food while chatting with the locals.

  • Day 8 - Departure

    Prepare for the departure. We will provide a free departure transfer to the airport if your flight falls within our free transfer schedule (please refer to the 'What's Included section for more information).
