Marangu Route Kilimanjaro 6 Days Climb
Highlights
- Hiking to the roof of Africa
- Accommodation in the Mountain Huts
- Climb Kilimanjaro via Marangu Route
Overview
Referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route, the Marangu route stands out as a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro, being the oldest and most established path. Many trekkers prefer the Marangu route due to its reputation as the easiest ascent, thanks to its gradual slope. Notably, it is the sole route that provides sleeping huts with dormitory-style accommodations.
While the minimum duration for this route is five days, the likelihood of successfully reaching the summit in that timeframe is relatively low. Opting for an additional acclimatization day on the mountain is strongly recommended when choosing the Marangu route for your Kilimanjaro climb.
Despite its widespread popularity, we choose not to lead climbs on the Marangu route. This is because it offers the least scenic variety among all the routes, as both the ascent and descent follow the same path, resulting in higher congestion. Marangu is typically favored during the rainy season when the hut accommodations become more appealing.
This is the easiest route/trail on Kilimanjaro and most recommended route for beginners or unexperienced hikers.
Oserok Trips recommend this route also for Luxury Kilimanjaro climbing option since it offers a different style of accommodation.
- Day 1 - Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)
Following breakfast, you'll be picked up from your lodge in Moshi and transported to the Marangu gate. Once the required paperwork is finalized, your trek commences, leading you through the lush rainforest. Amidst the striking vegetation, you may even have the opportunity to spot some primates as you make your way to the Mandara Hut. After a well-deserved break, your guide can escort you to the Maundi Crater, offering a breathtaking view of the Kenyan interior.
- Day 2 - Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m)
Commencing with an early breakfast, the day unfolds as you depart from Mandara Hut. As you progress, you'll soon traverse the timberline, entering the heath and moor zone. After approximately 4 to 6 hours, the Horombo Hut will emerge, situated at an altitude of 3700m. From this vantage point, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Mawenzi, Kibo, and the expansive plains of the Masai steppe.
- Day 3 - Acclimatization trek to Zebra Rocks (4020m) then back to Horombo Hut (3700m)
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial element that significantly enhances your chances of successfully reaching the summit. Following a leisurely breakfast, embark on a 4-hour trek to Zebra Rocks (4020m), named for its distinctive black and white stripes. Upon your return to Horombo Hut, a hearty lunch awaits. The afternoon provides an opportunity to unwind and replenish your energy for the upcoming hike on the following day.
- Day 4 - Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)
Today's leg of the journey is both lengthy and challenging. The robust trail leads past the "Last Water point," followed by the aptly named "saddle." This nearly vegetation-less plateau connects the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. The day's goal is to reach Kibo Hut, typically achieved in about 5 to 6 hours. Upon arrival, you'll indulge in an early evening meal, as the night will be brief, preparing you for the final ascent.
- Day 5 - Kibo Hut (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3700m)
Today marks "The Big Day" – the summit stage. Your final ascent begins around midnight, a prolonged and demanding endeavor. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb steadily ascends. At sunrise, you'll reach Gillman's Point (5681m), the crater rim of Kilimanjaro, where the sun gradually warms the land. The cold of the night will soon be forgotten, and after an additional 1 to 2 hours of hiking, you'll stand at Uhuru Peak at 5895m. Upon your return to Kibo Hut, a nourishing meal awaits, followed by a 1 to 2-hour break before descending to Horombo Hut.
- Day 6 - Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)
The final stage of your trek traverses the heath and moor zone, leading to the Mandara Hut (2700m), where a hearty lunch awaits. Subsequently, you'll journey once again through the tropical rainforest. After a total trekking time of 6 hours, you'll arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). Bid farewell to your mountain guides before a brief transfer takes you back to your hotel in Moshi.
