  • Learn about and experience Costa Rican culture through interacting with the local community

Overview

As a volunteer, you will support youth and community development initiatives in education, female entrepreneurship, digital literacy, animal welfare, sustainability and more by adding your unique skills to contribute to our existing programs. Volunteer activities in the past have included teaching English and computer skills to children and adults, community art projects, sporting events, educational field trips, and planning community events.

Alongside volunteer activities, there are planned recreational and cultural immersion activities which could include trips to national parks, traditional Guanacasteco towns and hot springs, yoga, zip-lining, cooking classes, water sports and much more. The itinerary will be tailored to the preferences of each cohort. Those who speak Spanish will have ample opportunity to practice and for those eager to learn, language classes can be arranged by request.

The length of the program will run from 4-16 weeks with four sessions per year offered, though a shorter stay can be arranged if desired. Participant numbers will be capped at 3-8 volunteers to allow for a personalized, meaningful experience. The program fee breaks down to approximately $345 per week (compared to the average cost of global volunteering at $688 per week) and includes an onsite coordinator, airport transfers, bicycles, accommodation, some meals, and all volunteer, cultural and recreational activities. A portion of the program fee also goes directly towards supporting Abriendo Mentes and its important programs. Transparency is a core value of our organization, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
